How to compare Ethiopian bank exchange rates
Banks publish separate buying and selling quotes for each currency. Compare the same currency and direction across banks, then check the publication date, fees and availability before exchanging.
To convert foreign currency to ETB, multiply the foreign currency amount by the bank buying rate. To buy foreign currency with ETB, divide your birr budget by the bank selling rate. The converter above uses eligible bank quotes and shows estimates before fees.

Why do Ethiopian banks show different exchange rates?
Each bank publishes its own buying and selling quotes. The highest eligible buying rate gives more birr for the same foreign currency before fees; the lowest eligible selling rate costs fewer birr per unit of foreign currency. Confirm the actual quote with the bank.
Are these today’s exchange rates?
Every quote carries the bank’s publication date and BirrNow’s check time. A quote is eligible only when checked within 48 hours, published within 72 hours, and its latest source check has not failed. Older or undated quotes appear as historical references. A recent check does not make an old publication today’s rate.
Does a bank rate include remittance fees?
No. For a money transfer, compare the total amount debited, the provider’s exchange rate, transfer charges and the final birr received. Read our guide to remittance exchange rates and fees.
