Compare the final amount received for the same total sender budget, destination, payout method and quote time.
What happened
This is a comparison framework, not a set of live provider offers. The World Bank’s remittance methodology considers the fee and the exchange-rate margin among the components of transfer cost. A fee alone is therefore an incomplete description of a quote.
A bank’s cash buy or sell rate is also not automatically the rate used by a remittance provider. Payout method, destination and service conditions can differ. BirrNow’s published bank comparison should not be presented as a guaranteed transfer offer.
Why it matters
Here is an illustration with invented quotes. With a total budget of $1,000, Provider A charges $5 and converts the remaining $995 at 160 ETB per dollar. The recipient gets 159,200 ETB. Provider B charges $15 and converts $985 at 162 ETB per dollar, delivering 159,570 ETB. The second option has a higher fee but pays out 370 ETB more in this example.
The arithmetic assumes the fee is deducted from the total budget before conversion and there are no other charges. If a provider charges the fee on top, reconcile that quote to the same total outlay before comparing it. Otherwise the apparent winner may simply involve spending more money.
Receiving charges, payment-card costs, withdrawal charges or additional currency conversions can change the comparison. Confirm the final payout in writing and keep its timestamp. A quote that expired yesterday is not evidence of the price available now.
Who is affected
Ethiopians abroad supporting relatives need a comparison that reflects the recipient’s usable funds. Households budgeting around a transfer also care about timing and the accessibility of the payout. A larger nominal payout can be less useful if collecting it adds costs or delays.
Businesses receiving foreign payments should additionally distinguish a personal transfer from a commercial transaction. The applicable requirements and service terms can differ. Verify them with the provider rather than assuming a consumer quote applies to a business invoice.
What to watch next
For every comparison, record total sender outlay, explicit fees, exchange rate, final recipient amount, payout currency and method, and the quote’s expiry. Compare offers obtained close together. A provider’s exchange-rate margin can change even when its advertised fee does not.
Separate an announced regulatory change from a change already applied to your transaction. NBE’s July 2026 FX commission decision is a dated policy reference, not proof that every provider quote has improved by the same amount. The practical test remains the full cost and payout shown for your specific transfer.
